  • Prevent wildfires: Do not light open fires or take barbecues onto the moor.
  • Give nature space: take all litter home including disposable wipes and dog poo bags
  • Camp responsibly: Backpack camp in areas designated on the camping map or use an official campsite.

All our staff including National Park Rangers work tirelessly to protect Dartmoor and promote why it’s a wonderful place to spend quality time.

The school summer holidays are our busiest period and we welcome people enjoying Dartmoor responsibly in its 75th anniversary year. The deployment of marshals gives us vital extra help in proactively speaking with people, enforcing byelaws and explaining why they matter. This all helps Dartmoor stay special for everyone.

  • Give wildlife space

    Keep dogs on a lead near livestock, don’t feed the ponies, and give grazing animals plenty of room.

  • Leave no trace

    Take all litter, food waste and dog poo home with you, and leave gates as you find them.

  • Be fire aware

    No open fires or BBQs , even a small spark can devastate the open moor.

  • Travel with care

    Stick to the 40mph limit, watch for animals on the road, and stay on the right paths and tracks.

Risk level alert

By understanding our fire risk ratings it will ensure you understand how to stay safe and prevent the risk of fires.

  • Low

    Dartmoor carries some fire risk all year round. Peatland and conifer forest can burn even in cold weather.

  • Moderate

    Ground is dry and wildfire risk is heightened. Fires are never permitted, to protect communities, wildlife, livestock and the moor.

  • High

    Fire starts easily and spreads fast. No fires or BBQs — stay vigilant and report smoke or flames without delay.

  • Extreme
